BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY
EXPENDITURE OF LOAN.
• REPORT BY THE MAYOR. The. following report was, presented by the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) at the special meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council last evening :— “The staff have now completed the laying of 4in pipes in Arney Street* Station Road, Moore Ro.ad, and Hill Street from Flora Street to Cullen Street, and a 2in pipe has been laid in Thames Road from the racecourse gates to the borough boundary. “The total cost of this, work to £1759 4s 2d; The cost of ■raising the loan was £4l 7s 6d (brokerage £2O, printing debentures £ll 7s 6d, solicitor £10), making a total to date of £lBOO. “Provision for the first year’s interest and. sinking fund must be made out of the -loan, and'this amounts to £l4O, leaving a credit balance in the loan account of £59 Bs, 4d.
‘.‘We have approximately 600 ft of 4ip mains- on hand-, and .we recommend tha,t.the 4in main be continued in Hill Street from Cullen Street to Kennedy Street, and the 2in'main in Kennedy Street to connect with the 2iiT main in Miller’s, Avenue. This would give a 2in circuit for this area, the whole of which from the main drain in-Rye Lane is served with a 2in main not on a circuit. There are a considerable number of houses in this block, and several more being erected which, , with the technical school and the sewerage installations, are certain to make a demand too great for a 2in pipe. This is the worst served --portion of the borough at the present time.
“We recommend the original, proposal to relay 14 chains.of 2inpipe in Old Te Aroha Road be adhered to. This, would connect, up with the new pipes laidj by/the_ Ohinemuri County six years ago. That the,. proposal to to lay a 2in pipe in Willoughby Street ahd Russel Street be adhered to with the addition of > connecting the-2in pipe in Russel Street; With the 2in pipe in- Wood Street. This 2in pipe could cofioe off a 9in pipe inNormariby, Road .and connect with a 4in. main near, the school,. and - would give a very good service. Indeed, tfhe material is' on hand for this work, *’a,nd the estimated cost of the,-labour is as follows: — “Laying. 4in main in Hill Street, £2l; laying, 2in main in Kennedy Street, £7 10s ; laying-2in- main-in Te Arolia Road, £23 ; laying 2in main in Willoughby and .Russell streets, £24 10s. Total, £76. ’
•’With a-credit-balance of only £59 8s 4d there would be an estimated shortage- of £l6 Ils Bd,. which would ha,ve to- be found from .the yf&t/eX Account.
' “After alloWing for. material which 'will be on hand after the completion of (this work; I find that the . actual cost of this £2OOO Avorth has exceeded the original • estimates by less, than £5. The* estimate's for labour were supplied entirely by the foreman, and the quantities wtere taken out jointly by uhe 'foremaji and myself and the bulk of the material, purchased by cable direct from England. , , “These must be considered satisfactory results, and I have pleasure in recording' my own appreciation of the foreman’is' efforts in regard to the expenditure of the .Water Improve-' ments Loan.” -
The report was adopted, and it was decided that the work as suggested be proceeded with. ; - -
