MEETING OF COUNTY COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council Ferry Committee was held on Monday, there being present Crs. J. C. Miller, J. F. Mayn, T. McLoughlin, C. W. Harris, C. Parfitt, the county clerk (Mr E. Mahoney), and the county engineer (Mr F. Basham). Cr. Miller reported that he had. secured the services of a competent mechanic, who. had valued the Wharepoa ferry engine .and plant a), over £3O. The county had accordingly purchased .the plant.

In reply to a question the engineer said that the Wharepoa ferry, plant, etc., could be shifted, within a few days, of instructions ip that effect being received. It was decided that provided a satisfactory arrangement could 1 be made between the Ohinemuri and Thames county councils in regard to the transferrence the engineer be instructed to have the ferry removed and the other county councils advised of the fact. The engineer was also instructed to confer with the Ohinemuri council or itsi engineer on the disposal fp the old Netherton ferry plant. CONDITIONS. Cr. Parfitt suggested that the fares on the ferry be the ordinary rates from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., double fares from 9 p.m. till midnight, with a minimum of 2s, 6d, and treble fares from midnight till 6 a-m. with a minimum of 7s 6d. The ferryman, Mr C. Nicholson, was to be offered £5 a week and 50 per cent, of .the takings from 9 p.m. till 6 a.m., together with a -free house, for a period of six months. In the event of the ferryman desiring to employ a substitute, the matter to be referred to the county engineer. The clerk was authorised to procure tickets for use at the ferry, and the matter of exhibiting the schedule of rates., providing lifebuoys, fire extinguishers, etc., was left to the engineer.

The ferryman is to account to the county treasurer weekly, and arrangements are to be made, for checking.

In the event of the Wharepba ferryman not agreeing to take charge of the Netherton ferry the engineer was authorised ,to- make an appointment.
