BICYCLE ACCIDENT.
CAR PASSES OVER CYCLIST.
ESCAPES WITH BRUISES:
Shortly after 5 o’clock on Friday evening an accident occurred in Normanby Road near the Wharf Street intersection opposite the band rotunda.
It appears that Mr R. S. Kallu, who wag riding a bicycle, came out from behind a vehicle with the intention of crossing the street. There was considerable traffic at the time, and the cyclist did not notice that he was heading directly into the path of an approaching motor-car driven by a well-known Insurance agent.
Realising that a head-on collision was, imminent, with great presence of mind Mr Kallu jumped off his machine almost as the car was on him, and lay flat clown on the roadway. By this time the driver of the car had realised the danger and had applied his, brakes, but .the car passed right over the cyclist before coming to a stop.
Bystanders were amazed to see Mr Kallu emerge with nothing worse than a bruising. The bicycle was considerably damaged. But for his presence of mind in lying flat, Mr Kallu must-have been seriously hurt.
Referring to the incident this, morning Mr Kallu said that other th ail feeling a little stiff he has quite recovered from his unenviable experience. He also stated that he was prepared to shoulder the responsibility, as he -considered he should have taken greater care before crossing the street.
