BOWLING.
RESULTS OF SATURDAYS’ GAMES.
GOLDFIELDS STARS RETAINED.
The Goldefllds Stars competition attracted considerable interest at the local green on Saturday .afternoon, when the Paeroa team successfully withstood a challenge from Te Aroha, finally .winning by 11 points. The afternoon wa.-s an ideal one as. regardsweather, and the green was in tip-top playing condition. In fact it was too keen in the early stages of the game, and it took both teams , some time to accustom themselves to the drawing conditions prevailing. A large crowd assembled to see the final stages, of the game, but as the visitons- failed to score on the last three heads the win was fairly easy. The teams were: Paeroa, W, McCullay, W. Power, W. Hamilton, W. Purdie (skip) ; Te Aroha, Heathcote, Wallace, Tony, H. C. Peterson (skip). The hopes, of .the supporters of the local team were somewhat dampened at the opening stages-, as the visitors piled on seven points in 'the first three heads while the Paeroa team •marked time. However, the l.ea,d of the visitors; was only temporary, as in six heads they failed to score while the local team gained 14 points. Large individual head scores were a feature of the game. During the 21 heads the visitors recorded three threes and two twos; and Pa.eroa replied with two fours, three threes, and two twos, the final scores, being: Paeroa, 27 ; Te Aroha, .16.
The brilliant play and generalship of Peterson received favourable comment. The other visitors played good bowls, but were badly outclassed. Of the local team Hamilton played the game of his life, and seldom did wrong, while Purdie played with sound judgment and skill. At the conclusion of the contest the president (Mr E. Edwards), on' behalf of the local club, congratulated the visitors oh the splendid fight they had put up.
Mr Peterson responded for the visiting team, and after congratulating the local team on their victory he paid a tribute to* their sportsmanlike qualities, and said '.that although his team had looked forward to taking the coveted stars back to Te Aroha with them, .they had been fairly beaten, but had thoroughly enjoyed the contest.
Cheers were then called for the victors and the vanquished, and were heartily given.
