NOXIOUS WEEDS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL DISCUSSION.

ACTION TO BE TAKEN. At the Paeroa Borough Council, meeting on Thursday night the growth of noxious weeds within the borough was introduced by Cr. de Castro drawing attention to the growth of blackberry on the Aorangi Road footpath. He said that as a result portions of the walk were almost impassable. The railway settlement people were complaining. The Mayor (Mr AV. Marshall) said that there would have to be some end to the complaints from that area. The council had done all possible to provide facilities for the settlement, the residents of which were not ratepayers.

Cr. Porritt agreed, and pointed out that there were many ratepayers who had not nearly as good footwulks to their residences. Cr. J. Pinder said that Aorangi Road was not the only area where blackberries were bad. He thought it was high time the ratepayers were requested to control noxious weeds. The weeds were assuming alarming proportions, and ga.ve visitors a bad impression of the borough. It was resolved that steps be taken to issue notices to ratepayers with noxious weeds'on or fronting ' their sections. A definite time would be allowed then in which to clear the weeds.

The Mayor said it was a huge undertaking, but something would have .to be done.

Cr. E. Edwards said tha£ whilst agreeing that some action should be taken he was opposed to the foreman being taken off maintenance and street work to attend to the matter. Cr. Brenan suggested that the ranger be asked .to report on certain properties, and to accept responsibility for 'the serving pf the notices and seeing that they AVere complied with.

The Mayor agreed that the work could be quite well carried but by the ranger, and added that he was strongly opposed to some ratepayers being penalised while others were permitted to dodge their responsibilities. The council would have to pursue the matter systematically, and no doubt a number of prosecutions would result.
