THE SANITARY SERVICE.

SEWERAGE INSISTED UPON.

REBORT OF HEALTH COMMITTEE. At Thursday night’s meeting of the local Borough Council the following report was submitted by the Health Committee :— “Your committee has gone into .the question of. reducing the cost of the sanitary night service, and has. to report tha,t the man has. agreed to accept a reduction in wages of £2 a week provided he is given one day a week work on the staff. At a later stage, when the work decreases, it is intended, to further reduce in this way, to which the employee is agreeable, provided work on the staff is given him so as, to provide him with a living wage. The foreman is agreeable to this, proposal, and We recommend that it be confirmed. Notices to connect up with the sewer are being served on persons where a reduction in the distance 'travelled by cart can be effected, with a view to reducing the Cost as soon as possible. “We attach hereto the list asked for of per&onis- in, a,nd adjoining, the" main street who have not connected with the sewer, and we suggest that everyone in the mani street should receive notice to connect forthwith. “A visit of inspection was made with the owner to the house in Bradley Street which was the subject of a communication from the Health Department’s, inspector, and as. a result we are able to report that the owner lias agreed to carry out the necessary repains in a satisfactory manner.” The attached list referred to showed that .there were 43 connections still required to be made. Of that number only six applications fpr connections had been lodged. The Mayor said it was, desirable that all properties on the main streets should be connected to the system as early as possible. The council, then went into committee to consider a number of applications for financial assistance to connect up. On resuming in open council it was resolved to grant three of the applications and to call tenders for the work. The report was adopted. Cr. Brenan remarked that it was a long time since the health committee had furnished the council with a report. The Mayor agreed, but added that it did itot necessarily signify that the committee was not alive totheheajth of the community.
