NETHERTON ROADS.
QUESTION OF LOAN SUBSIDIES.
STATEMENT BY MINISTER. In reply to a Query by the Hauraki Plains County Council as to what subsidies on individual items of the Nether, ton Riding metalling loan the council could expect in next year’s Public Works' roads estimates the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. J. G. Coates, has written advising the council that he is unable at the present time to offer any enlightenment as to the amount of fundi? which will be available for roading operations during the next financial year have not yet been ascertained. “In any case," the letter continued, “the question of which items of the council’s loan are subsidised next year is, as stated in previous letters, very largely one for the council’s own consideration. Local bodies are. advised as early as 1 possible in the new financial year of the exact amount of Government money which will be available to them for expenditure during that financial year, and the allocation of that' s,um to“ the various items is arranged by the local bodies in consultation with the district engineer of the department. The annual Public Works roads estimates are prepared about the middle of the year, the closing date for the receipt of local body applications usually being some time in June. An indication of which items may be dealt with under the funds available for the new financial year will then be obtainable, and your council would thus .appear to have ample time to arrange its finances in anticipation of the actual passing of the estimates ajid the arrival of the metalling season.”
