RADIUM FOR CANCER.
SYDNEY HOSPITAL’S APPEAL. Considerable interest is ,at present being centred on radium owing to the appeal by Sydney Hospital to the people of the State to subscribe £l5OO for the thorough equipment of its radium department. Moye radium is required for the treatment of women who suffer from disease which wil® not yield to surgical operation. While the cure of 53 cases of cancer of the skin in Wellington is pointed to, Sydney Hospital (says a Sydney correspondent) claims to be the first institution in Australia and New Zealand to use radium extensively for the treatment of skin cancer. Radium has been successfully employed at that institution in close on 2800 cases of skin cancer, apart from the cure of over 300 cases of skin disease. The hospital possesses £4OOO worth of radium, which wap purchased at the institute in Paris’. As very few institutions are able to secure this potent and wonderful element, owing to its enormous cost, people from all over the State visit Sydney Hospital for special treatment. Last year the radium was sent to Paris to be reconditioned, at a cost of £5OO.
