Fine weather prevailed (locally on Saturday, and a, stiff south-westerly wind helped considerably in drying the saturated condition of things which resulted from Friday’s storm. Yesterday there were several passing showers, and, generally, the weather was unsettled. The barometer is. still unsteady, and fine weather does not appear to be imminent.
' Constable McClinchy, of Paeroa, is at present on annual 1 ! leave, and is being relieved by Constable J. Barnes, of Te Aroha.
It is reported that during Friday night and early Saturday morning a quantity of refreshments that had been ordered for the entertainment of the Te Aroha bowlers was stolen from the local bowling p.avilion. Investigations have failed to find any .trace of the lost property. The police, it is understood, have the matter in httnd.
Mr J. D. Crawford, who met with a bicycle accident on Puke Road, Paeroa, last Thursday night week, has so far recovered a.,s ,to be discharged from the private hospital this morning.
The .tent at the Waihi Beach had a trying experience during the storm which set in early on Friday morning. The Wind, which was accompanied by heavy rain, blew dowrr several ,the tents, and many of the occupants had to take refuge in motor-cars. To these vehicles the homeless campers carried their bedclothes and did the best they could for themselves until, daylight.
Out of £1,189,689 paid in land tax in New Zealand, farmers pay only £663,483, the balance of £526,206 being paid by professions,!, men, manufacturres, and industrial concertis. The latter also pay income tax, from which the farmer is exempt.

The Waihi Borough Council decided on Thursday night to .take a referendum on the question of the borough becoming part of the Thames Valley Power Board district, and it was suggested that the poll be held on the same date as that to be fixed for the election of a licensing committee for Ohinemurl. of councillors as to the wisdom of joining in with the board varied considerably, hence the decision to refer the matter to the people.
The Commissioner of Taxes draws I the attention of/taxpayers to the notification appearing in to-day’s issu* that the due date of payment of the income-tax is Monday, February 8, 1926. Additional tax will accrue if the t;i;X is not paid on or before March 1, 1926. The demands' will be posted from the office of the Conimsteianer of Taxes on or about January 30, 1926. Demands must, be presented with all payments, and if a demand has not been received the Commissioner should be communicated with.
An American toothpaste firm, reporting on a survey of its advertising res.ults, states .that two million readers of its advertisements sent in for samples in twelve months, and that the letters arrived at times to the number of 10,000 in a single day.
