CAM!’ AT TARARIIKI CHEEK.

LOCAL TROOP UNDER CANVAS

For weeks paist the local Boy Scouts troop, led by the enthusiastic scoutmaster, Mr D. A. Vincent, has been busy preparing for a camp at Tarariki Creek, about two miles from Paeroa.

Shortly after nine o'clock this morning the .troop set out for the site of the camp. In addition .to each scout bringing his owji swag, comprising blankets, messing gear, change of clothes, etc., all food and camp equipment was packed into hand-carte', to which were .attached drag-ropes. A number of scouts manned each cart, which was pulled out to the camp site. Tents have been lo.a,ned, and a busy-time is to be spent .to-day erecting them, together with the cookhouse. Mr Vincent is camp commandant, and is assisted by Messrs J. W. Davies, and R. Urry, camp quartermaster. .

Given good weather a very enjoyable at- well as a profitable week should be spent by the lads under canvas. The ca.mp is being run on strict scout lines, and discipline and obedience Will be insisted on. Except under exceptional circumstances the scouts will hot be given Jpave to visit Paeroa, but each day two lads will be detailed to act as messenger's, and they will visit the town a,t 4 m’clock each day.' All parcels and messages for the camp left at Mr Vincent’s saddlery shop before .that time each afternoon will be conveyed to. the camp. Sanitation and hygiene will play a big part in the scheme of general training. In addition to having Mr Davies, who is a qualified St. John’s Ambulance officer, in camp, regular visits a.re to be paid by Dr. Smith, honorary surgeon to the troop., All the cooking, is to be done by the scouts, the only utensils to be used for the purpose being kerosene tins, and an iron sheet on which scones will be baked. Every scout will be required to take his turn at cooking and other fatigues connected with ( the camp. Reveille will be sounded at G.’3O a.m.', and lights out at 9 P.m.

An Interesting syllabus of training lias been drawn up, including signalling, physical drill, finst-ajd word, and the Schaefer method of life-saving. Mr C. H. Pascoe, chairman of the committee, intends visiting the camp each evening, and ha»s arranged a programme of organised games and other forms of amusement for after-tea, recreation.

As is required under the Boy Scout regulations, a compulsory rest is to be held for one hour immediately following the mid T day meal. During that time the lads are required to. He quietly in their quarters, and all activity’ is suspended. Permission has been obtained from the Ohinemuri County Council to temporarily dam a part of the creek so as'to form a bathing pool, and swimming lessons, will form a part of the routine. A gramophone has been loaned, and an attempt is to be made to form and coach a tin whistle and drum orchestra, On Sunday morning a church parade is to be held, and in the afternoon the camp will be thrown open to the public.
