CHURCH BURNT DOWN.
RELIGIOUS OP POSITION. INTOLERANCE AT BEDMINSTER. LONDON, January 11. The parish church of St. Michael’s, Bedminster, Bristol, has been burned down'. The damage is £12,000. The church was, strongly Anglo-C.atholic, and the police believe the opponents of ritual, deliberately set fire to the church, the vestry alone escaping. A safe .weighing several hundredweight was found overturned, and the vestments were in confufpion, but there is no real evidence of theft, though the miscreants apparently attempted to suggest a. burglary. CHURCHMEN DISAGREE. BISHOP AND VICARS QUARREL. LONDON, January 111 A religious crisis of the first importance is developing in the Birmingham diocese, owing to the vicars of 14 important parishes defying the Anglican bishop, Dr. Ernest W. Barnes. The vicars in question refuse to r;top the practice of the reservation of the Sacrament and the adoration of the sacred elements in. their tabernacles. The Anglo-Catholic vicars’ have already withdrawn from the Diocesan Finance Board, and Anglo-Catholics in all parts of the country promise their support if Dr. Barnes takes legal action against 'them!
