SWIMMING BATHS.

PLAINT FROM TE AROHA.

There .are very few towns in the Dominion which have not got their public swimming baths, and in this respect Te Aroha, is behind the times (says the Te Aroha News). are, of course, the tepid baths in tire Domain, which are available to all, and repairs have been effected to the cold swimming bath, but in neither case are the requirements of those who regard swimming as a pleasant and healthy recreation fully met. Morrinsville has what is believed to be one of the best swimming baths, in New Zealand. The estimated cost was £2OOO, but the work was done for £3OO below that figure. Recently a meeting was held at Paeroa*to discuss ways and means for constructing swimming baths for that town, and a committee wias, set up to obtain information from other towns, and also estimates of cost. The .matter of having public swimming baths in Te Aroha should be seriously taken up. A certain amount of bathing is done in the Waihou River, which, owing to the strong currents, is very uns.afe. The river would not be used if there were proper cold swimming baths. It is recognised by those who are interested in the establishment of municipal baths that the initial cost would not be the only cost. There would be the caretaker’s s,alary and other expenses, but these should be more than offset by the revenue. The baths would undoubtedly be popular, and occasional carnivals could be run to swell the returns.
