CHRISTMAS EVE.
RECORD ‘CROWD AT PAEROA.; increase of BUSINESS. / The true Christmas Eve spirit was; abroad in the streets of Paeroa.. on' Thursday evening, and an air or good -' will and happy abandon prevailed, in, the 'town. A joyful crowd paraded,, the s,treats, and from dusk until a Late hour sounds of revelry echoed throughout, a sustained roar from squeakers and trumpets contributing a raucous quota to the general noise. Seldom has such a large crowd been seen in the streets, of Paeroa- In addition to the crowded footpaths,-.the-roadways were taxed with slowly moving traffic, comprising vehicles of aU , descriptions. Fortunately there were' no accidents to mar the evening’s, pleasure. ■ . - - The retailers made a creditable disr - play, and left little undone to attract purchasers, and satisfaction, goodyvalue, and prompt and efficient ser-> vice formed the.keynote of the Christ-, mats shopping week. ; On inquiry from some of the local shopkeepers yesterday morning the? general opinion was ' expressed that ■ tlie volume of business transacted, on Christmas Eve was in many instatfees' considerably in excess" of the corresponding day in While others said that.their “takings” only aboutequalled those of last Christmas Eve, they pointed out that this year the® Christmas buying period' extended, over four days, People from the outlying districts who - visited Paeroa to shop during; Christmas 1 week generally express themselves as being well satisfied with the selection of goods and ser-. vice to be obtained, and agree that Paeroa is, destined .io become the shopping centre for a large area of populous country. The efficacy of a little judicious advertising in the Hauraki Plains Ga-? zette has been endoised by at least one shopkeeper, who mentioned that his Christmas, write-up had been read by people from outside of Paeroa,: amb mention had been made of a certain' line that had been advertised in these columns. . ' Having made a. for itself as a; shopping centre it is to be hoped that: the business people of Paeroa will not , relax their efforts, to maintain the trade, and by good service, educate, the public to shop in their own town.-
