MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT.
OVERTURNED ON TE AROHA ROAD
OCCUPANTS’ LUCKY ESCAPE.
A motor-car accident occurred on the main road at Tirohia near Mrs Hannah’s property on Monday mOrn-
mg. -xl It appears that Mr J. Eggerton, with his wife and three children and a male companion, was. proceeding from Waihi to Arapuni in an old-model Ford car. They were driving at a steady pace when the car began to steer badly, and before Mr Eggerton had time to stop there was a grinding noise, and, becoming unmanageable, the car left the road and plunged ten feet down into a swampy gully, turning a complete somersault at it went. «■ The occupants had a miraculous escape, and no one was seriously injured. Mrs Eggerton and her children, who were occupying the back seat, were extricated with difficulty from beneath the tangled hood, while Mr. Eggerton was/thrown almost clear of the car and escaped with a few scratches. His companion in the front seat, on whom a part of the car was, resting, was found to be. unhurt except for a few bruises. Passersby who ha?e seen the car in its upturned position in the gully marvel at the fortunate escape, of the occupants. A broken front axle was the cause of the accident, and apparently the axle was cracked, causing the car to steer erratically before finally breaking in two and rendering the steering wheel useless. An examination reveals thjat! the car is badly damaged. In addition to the broken axle the front wheels are thrown out of alignment, the body badly damaged, and the windscreen and hood are smashed.
