BREAKING UP FOR HOLIDAYS.

CELEBRATIONS ON PLAINS.

The end of the school year was celebrated in many ways by the schools on the Plainjs; In some places sports were held, in others concerts or children’s Rances, and at some of the smaller schools, such as Orongo-and Mangatarata, afternoon tea and gifts were provided for the children.

On Saturday the 12th, the Miranda school held a picnic on the beach, and on Thursday last the New Brighton public school and private school held a combined picnic. New Brighton was visited by the pupils of the Kerepeehi school and .their parents bn Saturday, and an enjoyable picnic was held. Four motor lorries, and a dozen cars were used to convey the picnickers, and about forty punctures, were experienced.

At Waitakaruru sports were held on Friday afternoon, the children having previously been given Lunch. They were addressed by the chairman of the school committee, Mr Harris, and special prizes were presented for general proficiency, diligence, behaviour, etc., to Master D. Leslie, Miss Hope Torr, Miss Beryl Hunter, and Miss Eileen Donaghy, the two latter prizes having been donated by Mr Tomlinson. Prizes . for sewing were presented to Miss Edna Jows.ey and Miss Lorna Harris.

Following are the prizewinners in the running events: —

Girls.—Twelve to. 16 years : G. Harris 1, E. Caie 2, M. Elliott 3 ; 9 to 12 years : J. Jessen 1, M. Ferrell. 2, A. French 3 ; 7 to 9 years : C. Jessen 1, L. Harris 2, L. Berney 3; under 7 years : E. Jessen 1, J. Torr 2, R. Hunter 3. Three-legged race : Lorna Harris and Leia Berney 1, E. Jowsey and D. Hunter 2, I. Jessen and A. French 3. Consolation race : V. Mohekey 1, E. Hoffman, 2, D. Lennan 3. Boys.—Eleven to 15 ye,ars : R.. Ferrell 1, C. Jowsey 2, S. Beaver 3 ; 9 to 11 years : G. Jowsey 1, J. Lough 2, G. Beaver 3 ; 6 to 9 years, C. Hunter 1, J. Leslie 2, H. French 3. Three-leg-ged race : R. Ferrell and C. Jowsey 1, C. Hunter and D. Leslie 2, G-. Jowsey and B. Caie 3.
