Reporting' the match, the Thames “St,ar” sayts: —
The best tennis seen in Thames for many years was provided: by the match between the Plains and Thames last Saturday. There was a good attendance of spectators, who were kept on the tip-toe of excitement until the last stroke. The clpseness of the contest is. shown by the fact that Thames won 85 games and Plains 84. Witli two matches to be decided Plains were leading by 6 matches to 5. Thames then won the first men’s doubles 9 —7, making the match 6 a.ll. The result then depended on the second men’s double. Plains were leading in this game 6 —4, but Thames took the next four games, lost the fifteenth, but won the sixteenth, and with it the match. The Plains ladies were stronger than the local ladies, winning both ladies’ doubles. The Thames men were superior ,to the visitors, winning three out of ,four singles and two out of three doubles. Du- Gray' in his singles, against Griffiths showed his best form; and had his opponent at liis mercy. However, he and Poulgrain had to, light for every point in their, doubles match. For a time it looked as though Griffiths,’ h,ard drives and accurate placements, combined with Mruphyfe tremendous smashes, would give the Plains, a' victory in this match. As it was, they were only beaten by a narrow margin. JMrs Glovei\ achieved a very meritorious victory over Mrs Speedy, 7—5. This was a: splendid match, neither player being satisfied merely to' return the ball, but going for winning shots every, time. Mrs, Speedy tired towards the end, and lost the match bj? serving a; double faulty
