THAMES HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The regular meeting of .the Thames I-lospital and. Charitable Aid Board was, held at Thames on Monday, the chairman (Mr W. E. Hale) presiding over the following f Messrs. W. J. Hall, G. Death, A. R. Robinson, H. C. Kennedy, A. L. Berney, I. Rowe, J. W. Danby, and ,the secretary (Mr GTonge). ANNEXE: MATRON. Sister A. Potterton wrote .thanking the board for having appointed -her to take charge of the maternity annexe, and stating that it would be her earnest endeavour to qualify permanently for the position. DUNEDIN HOSPITAL FEES The Dunedin Hospital Board wrote advising that charges for maintenance in the Dunedin Hospital. o.f patients from districts other than the Otago hospital district would in future be fixed at a rate equal to the cost per bed occupied for the previous year. The cost per bed at Dunedin for the year ending March 31 last was £219 15s 2d, and charges in future had been decided on at the rate of 12s a day. The chairman said that there was an increase of 3s a dayiIt was resolved that in future, s,<* far as Otago district was concerned/ the charge per day for patients would be 12s a day at Thames also. Mr Kennedy said he did not think that it wars necessary to acknowledge the letter, and he was opposed to the Thames Board fixing its fee at 12s, a day. Mr Robinson said it was possible that the Otago people would be coming north to .try ,tlie Auckland provincial climate, and he was of opinion that the Thames charges should be made public. SUPERANNUATION. The Department of Health, Wellington, wrote advising that the matter of superannuation for hospital employees had been referred to the National Provident Fund office for consideration. PAYMENT OF' FEES. Several letters, were "received from ex-patients stating their inability to pay accounts for treatment owing to financial reasons, and asking the board to grant them further 'time to find the amounts due. The action of the secretary in taking steps to collect the outstanding amounts was endorsed, in each innpp>. LOAN MONEY. The offer of the Thames branch of the Bank of New Zealand to loan £7ooo’ for the erection of an isolation block and steam laundry at 6 per c ent. was accepted, and the chairman and secretary were authorised to sign the necessary documents. COMMITTEES. The following committees were set up: District- Horned Messi® Death and Berney; Hospital and Annexe, Messrs Kennedy and RowaGREETINGS, The chairman extended seasonal greetings to the members, secretary, and press at the conclusion of the meeting. SURGEON’S REPORT. The resident surgeon (Dr. James Ritchie) reported that 29 males and 34'females had been admitted during November. There had been five deaths —four males ,and 1 female — and 34 maleis and 27 females had been discharged. There were 25 males and 29 females in the institution at November 3ft. Operations numbered 21 males and 18 females, and 8 males and 2 females received outpatient’s treatment, involving 71 attendances. A request was made for a dozen beds,ide lockers, and -also six wooden- couches to enable patients to have the advantage of heliotherapy, and open-air 'treatment generally. Permission was, afe'a sought to subscribe to a magazine dealing with current advances: in medical and surgical knowledge for the benefit of the nursing staff. The report was adopted and permission given to obtain six lockers and two couches. MATRON’S REPORT. The matron (Sister K> M. Ansenne) reported at length on staff and domestic matters. A donation of £6 had been received from the Women’s National Reserve for Christmas’ comforts for the patients. Four patients had been admitted to the maternity annexe, .and there had been four' births, ont patient remaining at date. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr 1 A. Ml. Somerville) reported that- the annual inspection of the plhnt had been made by the inspector of machinery, who had expressed satisfaction with the plant. The coal consumption for the month was 27 tons 3cwt ' The report was approved, and the engineer was granted his annual leave to January 14, 1926.NATIVE NURSE. The district native nurse: (Nurse J,. M. Jarrett) reported that she had nursed. 18 patients ,and paid ,a total of 116 visits. There had been one death. Fourteen Maori pas had been visited during the month and lectures, given on how to nurse measles, and' also on gastro-enteritis. Fees received totalled.. £2. DISTRICT NURSE. The Patetonga district nurse. (Miss McNamara) reported- that she had attended 20 patients, involving 33 visitis, during the monthi. Fees received amounted to £3 9s. DISTRICT HOMES. The superintendent of the Tararu Homes (Mr W. D. Gilmore) reported that there were 17 men and 4' women in the institution, and .the conduct of both sexes had been very good. The farm a,nd stock were in good order and condition. The National Reserve had donated the sum of £3 10s towards providing. Christmas cheer for the inmates,. y

ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £1297 13s. 3d were passed for payment.
