CORONATION STREET.

CTo the Editor.} Sir, —In your report of the Borough Council meeting of Tuesday, December 8, you report me a® having stated that as a result of the street being raised, causing the water to back up, my hedge was being ruined. His Worship the Mayoi-) explained that particular care had been taken to lay a 9ip pipe across the road, and a water-table had been formed to allow the water to enter the pipe. CT Edwards moved .that a reply be sent' to me stating that reasonable measures had been taken to provide reasonable drainage in that locality, and that the position was not ,as stated.

Sir, my respect for His Worship the Mayor and Cr. Edwards leads me to conclude that both gentlemen have unintentionally misjudged the extent of the trouble, or they could pot possibly have questioned tlie correctness of my statement. The 9in pipe so carefully laid is absolutely useless. A visit to this, spot in winter months, or after a heavy rain will prove my statement to be correct. If a watertable has been formed’it is exceedingly hard: to find, as it must be on a level with,'or perhaps a-’ little higher than, the footpath. The raising of the road and the uselessness of the 9in pipe hold the storm-water back, and the result is exactly as I stated*. If evidence is needed to convince the council, and particularly Cr. Edwards, he can get it quite easily, as. I, am sure Messrs G. Davidson, J. Stack, J. Brooks, L. Wright, and' H. Hughes can supply it. I may say that I never seated that water was on my property at the present time, but to anyone' who- is not stone-blind the evidences are beyond dispute. During the five winter months I have had to, allow my neighbour access to his. house through my property, as it was quite impossible to get to his front gate. The Mayor’s -suggestion of a libtle self help is rather musty, as the ratepayers of Coronation Stree.t and many other streets in. Paeroa are quite accustomed to paying rates arid doing the work themselves. Paeroa has certainly an unenviable reputation in that respect. The bulk of the work in forming the road in front of my place was done by the late Mr James, McKee and myself. Why Cr. Edwards should move a motion in the direction he did is difficult to interpret, and with all due respect to- that gentleman I repeat that my statements are correct. I have asked the council, to relieve the position and certainly expect fairplay. D. D. UNDERWOOD.'
