The gate takings at the Hauraki Ajand P. Association’s Show at Paero'a on Friday amounted ■to £7O Bs, which amount is an increase of between £25 and £3O over the corresponding day last year.
A lire occurred at Thames on Saturday night which resulted in the tqtal destruction of a couple of shops in Pollen Street adjoining the Imperial Hotel'and pant of the hotel. It seems remarkable that .the hotel was not completely destroyed as the building is old and would have readily burnt. Further particulars were not available when we went to press.
No less a sum than £9161 18s Id was paid into the funds, of the British sailors’ (N.S.Wi. strike committee during the 14 weeks’ strike recently ended.
Following the grand parade at the Show on Friday afternoon Master George Peake, Cambridge, gave an exhibition of bare-back riding over hurdles. Riding his hunter’ Marcus without saddle or bridle, the boy piloted his mount very cleverly over the swing gate and the brush.fence three times. He received rounds of applause from the spectators.

While faking part in the final jump in the hunting competition at the Show on Thursday afternoon Mr W. AS Fisher, rider of Mr A. M. Fisher’s hunter Tui, ricked his back and was unable to fulfil life engagements on the following day. Mr A. M. Fisher rode Tui in the different events on Friday.
In response to representations made by the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce the secretary (Mr E. A. Porritt) has received advice from the district traffic manager, N.Z. Railways, that the department is making arrangements for the extension of the telephone from the Paeroa railway station to the goods-shed.
We have received from the lion, secretary of, the Mercury Bay Swordfish and Moko Shark Club, Mr S. JI Bishop, a nicely printed leaflet setting out particulars of deep-sea fishing at Mercury Bay. The fishing ground iis within two hours’ sail of the township, and the season commences in the middle of January and continues until March or April. The club, which consists of keen sportsmen, has a fleet of six safe and staunch high-powered launches, and will make all arrangements for visitors, including hotel accommodation and hiring of gear if required.
Speaking of the class for a champion dairy cow, in milk, any breed, the judge, Mr H. Wintlsjor, said that in his opinion ‘the class should be deleted. It was a most unfair class for pedigree breeders, and a very difficult one to judge. Most judges had a leaning towards a particular breed, and no matter how unbiased a. judge tried to be his, favourite breed "got in his eye,” and not infrequently dissatisfaction was found with the award.
