PAEROA-WAIHI ROAD.
ALLOCATION OF MAINTENANCE. NEW AWARD DISCUSSED), The chairman of the Ohinemuri County Council (Mr W. F. Johnstone) and the Waihi Riding member (Mr P. Corbett) waited on the Mayor of Waihi (Mr W. M. Wallnutt) and the town clerk (Mr J. J. Ritchie) recently to discuss the position of .the award by which the Waihi Borough Council has. to contribute towards the upkeep of the Waihi-Paeroia main road and the portion of .the Waihi-Tauranga main Toad which lies within the boundaries of the Ohinemuri County. The award was made over 20 years ago, but with the coming into force of the Highways Act the position has become altered to the extent that the Highways Board now contributes onehalf of the upkeep. The conditions of the proposed new award were discussed, and a basis on which both councils will be asked to agree at their next meeting was reached. The suggested award will mean a variation in the charges levied under the present arrangement by which the borouch council pays one-half of the maintenance cost from Puke Road to Paeroa, one-third from Waikino to Waihi, and two-thirdsi from, the Waihi Cemetery to the Tauranga County boundary.
It is hoped to include in the Ohineduri County part of the Tauranga County, the rates, from which now go to the Tauranga County Council, although the Beach Road, to which the Ohhiemuri County Council contributes, gives access to the area included in its district, so that the additional rates will be s,et off to the council’s portion of the upkeep of the Beach Road. —Waihi Telegraph.
