STREETS IN BOROUGH.

WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT.

REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE,

The following report was submitted by the works committee to the Paeroa Borough Council at its meeting on Tuesday night: — "During the past month fair progress wias made with the laying of 4in water-mains, but it was, found expedient to take the men off this work in order to push on witlh the formation work in Belmont Road. "Bennett Street and the top end of Hill Street have been prepared for metalling, and tenders have been called for same. That of Mitchell Bros;,, being the lowest, was accepted for Bennett Street. The same tenderer is lowest for carting off ground to Hill Street, but is equal [or carting ex hopper with the next tenderer. We recommend that the tender for Hill Street be accepted subject to the tenderer being able to carry out both jobs promptly, as, we desire to push on with this work.

“The septic tank to the ladies’ room has been constructed and .the drains laid by our own istaff, and it is hoped to make the room available for Friday.

“The annual cleaning of the main street is now being done, and we recommend that as far as finances will permit the sides of the bitumen road be tarred and landed. The strip which was done last year opposite Mr Bain’s shop is quite a success, and is not nearly so slippery as the bitumen. The conditions under which this piece was done were anything but good, and we think that a better job can be assured! ."The hill on Thames Road from Raroa Road to the racecourse wlhich was made a really good job of last year, is beginning to show s.igns of attrition. We suggest that it be tarsealed and sanded. It will be in the nature of an experiment, but the present condition of this strip is ideal for the purpose. The estimated cost is £25. If it is the success we anticipate it will result in permanently saving a piece o+' good road. The reason for suggesting tar instead of bitumen is because it would be less slippery for the grade.

“In connection with the formation of Belmont Road, we recommend piping 180 ft of the drain in Station Road from its intersection with Belmont Road witli 9in concrete pipeisi The estimated cost of this work is £l7 10s, to which .the cost of filling in as far as Albert Street must be added (approximately £7 10’s), but some of this work must, be done in : consequence of the formation work in Belmont Road.” The report was adopted.
