ATHLETICS.

PAEROA ASSOCIATION FORMED. SPORTS MEETING PROPOSED. There was an attendance of 23 persons at the Soldiers’ Club, Paeroa, on Friday evening, when the formation of an athletic club and the holding of a sports meeting were considered. In view of counter-attractions the attendance was smaller than was. expected, but the enthusiastic nature of the proceedings made up for what wajs lacking in actual, numbers. His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) presided. '

In opening the meeting the Mayor extended congratulations to the promoters of the meeting, and said it was laudable to see the young men stepping themselves out to assist the cause of sport. If a club was formed that night he believed it would receive the hearty support of the public. Sport was .the true prerogative of youth, but there was. much the older men could do. Help and guidance was necessary if success was to be assur 1 - ed. An athletic club would be to the advantage 'and credit of Paeroa, and he would very much like to see the project undertaken with thoroughness and enthusiasm and carried to fruition. FORMATION OF CLUB.

On the motion of Mr W. ’smith it was resolved that a club be formed, to be known as. the Paeroa Athletic Club, and that steps, be taken to affiliate with the Northern, Athletic Union, after which (he executive committee consider ways and means for the holding of an athletic gathering this season.

Seconded by Mr C. Rolton and carried unanimously.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

The election of officers for the ensuing.season resulted as follows : — Patron, Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P.; president, Mr W, Marshall ; vicer presidents, Messrs V. J. Innes, G. H. Taylor, R. Waddingham, J. Walmsley, C. P. Topliss.; secretary and treasurer, Mr K. L. Slyfleld; management committee, Messi's D. A. Vincent, W, Moore, senr., W. Smith,; C. Rolton, T. M. Wilkinson, A. Bridge, J. M. Fox, J. W. Silcock, T. H. Hale, EL Thorp.

On the motion of Mi’ N. C. Busby it was decided that .those present’ form themselveis into an athletic club, and that the question of fees be decided at the first general meeting. Seconded by Mr W. Moore and. carried. - GENERAL. The date of holding the' athletic sports, meeting was left in abeyance, but it was recommended to the committee that January 30, following the Hikutaia meeting, be considered. Mr Slyfleld appealed to the meeting for the services of persons willing to act as trainers. It was decided that the first committee meeting be held on Saturday, December 12. A hearty vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding concluded a very enthusiastic meeting.
