This year the Hauraki A', and P. Association has arranged with the Railway Department for the issue of excursion fares from Hamilton, Thames, Waihi, and intermediate stations to pensona attending the annual show at Paeroa on Thursday and Friday of next week.

A meeting of all. interested in the formation of an athletic club, and the inauguration of a sports meeting, fs to be held in the Soldiery’ Club, Paeroa, at 8 o’clock this evening.

An experiment to test the comparative merits of red metal, and shell as a blinding material for macadam roads is being made at Ngatea. At the last meeting of the council Or. Hayward observed that members of Aucklan'd local bodies had commented that it was strange that the Plains County was sending to McCallum’s. Island for red metal while the Auckland local bodies were sending past that island to Miranda for shell for blinding purposes. The argument in favour of the shell is that it does not blow away as dust during the summer months. The comparative experiment is being made to test the other qualities..

In next .week’s issue will be incorporated the special Christmas number.

The application of Mr Gleeson for j removal of the license of the Thames Hotel, Auckland, to Quay Street has been refused by the City Licensing Committee, a& it was considered that it was not required in the neighbourhood.

The charges for admission to the Paeroa Domain during the holding of the Hauraki A. and P. Show has been fixed at adults Is and children free on the first day ; and adults Is 6d, children 6d, on People's! Day. k

A nine-year-old Maori boy, Richard Brown, of Ngatea, had his left arfii broken near the wrist on Wednesday afternoon as the result of a. fall from a willow tree which, hq had climbed to obtain a bird’s nest.- He was taken to the Thames Hospital for an X-ray examination and treatment.

The magisterial recount for the Lyttelton seat, which took place yesterday, has resulted in Mr Lyons being elected by a majority of six votes, Mr Lyons securing 4890 votes and Mr McCombs 4884.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri-' County Council Mr J. Hamilton, Karangahake, was granted a lease of the Mackaytown quarry site and dump for a term of fourteen years at a rental of £5 a year.

The P,aeroa Cricket Club will formally commence its season at the domain to-morrow atfernoon, when an inter-club match will be played with Te Aroha. The local eleven will be selected from the following: Adame, Bay, Dare, Farrow, Fox, Jenkinson, Jenyns, Pivott, Rackham, Rix, Rolton, Shand, Stack, Tarns. Verran, and Wilkinson.

Accounts totalling £979 16s 6d were passed for payment at the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council yesterday. Receipts received for the month of November amounted to £1156 3s Id.

The magisterial recount of the licensing vote for the Ohinemuri electorate is taking place at the Courthouse, Paeroa, to-day. Under the provisions of the Licensing Act Mr J. H. Salmon, who is unable to preside, has appointed Mr H. R. Bush, clerk of the Court, Thames, to conduct the recount. The following scrutineers are also in attendance : Mr E. J. Clendon, Thames, representing the National Council of New Zealand ; Mr J. H. Beeche, Waihi, N.Z. Alliance ; Mr E. Edwards, Paeroa, local. Restoration League; and-, the Rev. H. Cottom, Waihi, local No.-license League. The recount hats been granted on the application of supporters of prohibition,,, said to be associated with the' N.Z. Alliance, following on a conference held at Paeroa subsequent to November 4. ’.

: A savings, bank letter -of credit system came into operation on Tuesday last. The system provides that a savings bank depositor in New Zealand requiring funds at any one or more of the several places in New Zealand at which there are branches of the Post Office Savings Bank may purchase a letter of credit for a s ; um not exceeding £5O. . The holder can present the letter of credit at any of the offices and obtain such moneys as maybe required within the limit authorised.

The presence of mind of one man and his ability to grasp an opportunity had its reward in a Wanganui street the other evening when a jazz band was playing (relates the “Chronicle”). A delighted audience was listening to the music when a man with a hat in hand moved quickly round among the people. x W.hen he had collected a tidy sum he put the money in his. pocket, replaced his headgear, and calmly walked up .the street. The band evidently did not participate in tile “takings.”

A return, tabled at yesterday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council, showed that 68 cattle, 103 sheep, 4 calves, and 4 pigs, were slaughtered at the Paeroa abattoirs during November. The fees totalled £39 Ils 3d.

A London newspaper mair tells this story of Charles Peace: —“One of my first jobs on the staff of a newspaper was to attend to the execution of Charles Peace. He came down very jauntily, thanked the Governor for all the consideration he had -shown him, took an affecting farewell of the chaplain, and said good-bye to each of the warders in turn. Then he turned and surveyed us journalists, who were gathered in a group on one side. ‘Gentlemen of the Press,’ he remarked with great dignity, ‘I need not say good-bye to you, for—we shall meet again ! ’ ”

The Marlborough Patriotic Association occupies an. almost unique position among the patriotic bodies which -sprang up during the war. To-day (slates the “Express”), seven years after the conclusion of hostilities, it is as active as ever in attending to the comfort and financial needs of the district’s soldiers and their dependants, and it still has £21,224' available to carry on • the good work, though £9310 13s 9d has been disbursed in relief to soldiers, £5349 Os 5d in relief to dependants and £3328 25,4 d in comforts. In all the years of the association’s existence administration expenses .have absorbed only £2Bll 16s 4d, which must be . something in .the nature of a record; working but at only a trifle over £2OO per annum.

“Old Nathan,” a Maori, died at the Picton Hospital recently at the great age of 107 years, which is in all probability a record for this part of theDominion (states an exchange). Although doubted by many, his age has been certified to by responsible persons of his own race, from hearing what their grandfathers have told them about the old veteran’s escapades in the days! of the “Hau Haus.’’ Nathan is reputed to have been bred among the heathens of. the race, and he has admitted on many occasions that he has seen white men in his day victims, of the tomahawk and the roasting process.
