EXTRA PENNY AN HOUR.
ENGINEERS’ AWARD.
EMPLOYERS WILL NOT GIVE IT.
Alleging that .the workers of New Zealand have been deprived of over £66,0001,000 during the last three years, and are now losiing £41,65.0 a month through wages not being increased as they should have been, the Wellington Union of Engineers are out to agitate for the extra penny an hour given by the Arbitration Court on September 18. This was made clear at their meeting held in the Trades Hall on Tuesday evening, when Mr Bromley, the secretary, read a circular he is sending out tb various unions. The extra penny an hour, suggested by the court for the three sections of workers —unskilled, semi-Stkilled, and skilled —it was stated, met with point blank refusal from employers.. In Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Wellington representations were made to ironmasters, but all .without success. The union states 'that the matter was being considered until the day after the elections. Then it was definitely decided that the riSfe in wages could not be given for various reasons.
