SERVICES APPRECIATED.

PRESENTATION TO MR. POLAND.

KARANGAHAKE FUNCTION-

A representative gathering of residents of the Ohinemuri electorate assembled'at Karangahake on Tuesday eveiling to entertain Mr H. Poland, ex-M.P. for Ohinemuri. The entertainment took the form of a dance and euchretournament.

During the evening Mr B. Morris* of Karangahake, who occupied tile chair, said that it was a privilege for him to have been selected on this memorable occasion to present. Mr and Mrs Poland with a silver tea service, together with a silver stand, spoon, and fruit dish, in Regina ware, a gift from the people of Karangahake, and as a token of the esteem in which both were held. Mr Morris outlined the many valuable points in the political career of Mr Poland, the proof ref which, he stated, could be found during the past twenty years ill the pages of Hansard.

Mr A. D. McGuire also spoke, and in a few well-chosen words endorsed' the remarks of the previous speaker. Mr Poland, on rising to reply, was greeted with rapturous cheers. He said it was a pleasing remembrance once more to be addressing such a representative working class audience at Karangahake, and recalled the numerical strength he had commanded in this electorate in the years gone by, particularly those of 1905 and 1911. He mentioned the familiar names of men who had worked so valiantly for him in their endeavours to return him at election .time at the top of the poll. Some of them were gone forever, while others, through illness and age, and still others, through circumstances, had been compelled to leave that depleted mining to,wn for all time. Mr Poland paid a glowing tribute to the generosity of ■the Karangahake people at all times when one of their number was unfortunate enough .to need financial help. He referred to the pleasing spectacle before him where the remnant of his one-time many friends, remained .true to him still. As in the campaign of twenty years ago, so. today in 1925 they, Ithe people of Karangahake, had accorded him their ( full strength at the recent poll, It was functions of Zhis kind that made for a better understanding between man and man in all that concerned the welfare and happiness of the great mass of humanity. He thanked his many friends for their lofng and continued support.
