STATEMENTS MISUNDERSTOOD.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln your issue of November 16. in reference to the question of an overhead?traffic bridge in Hill Street, you report me as saying, “That, when approaching the department s'tre.-s might be laid on the fact that the council has assisted the department considerably by acceding to its request and closing Hill Street.” In this I have been quite misunderstood. What I said, was; “That we must remember’ that the council, had definitely agreed to the closing of Hill Street level crossing and accepted the provision of a footbridge only, and that agreement must be honoured.”. The position is that had we not done so the station buildings would have been nearly half a mile further away, and beyond all the houses of the borough. Further, the work done by the department in Taylor’s Avenue was in consideration of our closing the said crossing. My reason for writing is that I think' it desirable that the position should be clearly understood.

Then, again, in your issue of November 18, reporting on the opening of the tennis court, I am reported as saying, “That the Borough Council was negotiating for the purchase of three and a-half acres of land adjoining the tennis courts to be set aside a municipal reserve. He looked forward to the future, when a portion of that area would be utilised as .a bowling green and provision made for other forms of outdoor sports.” I 1 certainly never mentioned or thought of a bowling green being laid down on the property. What I tried to point out was that the area would be a municipal reserve, but that with the growth of interest in outdoor sport and tlie comparative shortage of playing areas I should not be surprised if ultimately it was used for recreation' purposes. W. MARSHALL.
