PAEROA BOROUGH.
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting cf the Paeroa Borough Council was held last evening, His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over ,the following : Councillors E. EdwUrds, J. W. Silcock,’ G. P. de Castro, P. E. Brenan, F.,E. Flatt, J. Pinder, H. J. Hare, E. A. Perfitt,-and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander)' ' WILLIAM STREET TUB WAY. The' district engineer, N.Z. Railways-, advised that the department was anxious to push ahead with the . construction of the subway in William Street, and requested that the council take the necessary steps to close the road over .the crossing for a period of six weeks from October 26. - ~~ The Mayor said that the street was closed, and arrangements had been made for pedestrians to be safeguarded. as far as possible. , i Cr. .Brenan said that he would like the council to record its .appreciation of • .the way the work was being handled by the Railway officials. The closing of the street and crossing was a considerable inconvenience to many, and the department was doing itsibest to minimise the inconvenience. a It was decided to endorse the action of the Mayor in closing the street and also to write to the department expressing appreciation of the assistance given by the railway officials. ■■ EXHIBITION PUBLICITY. ~' The’organiser of the Auckland provincial court at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition wrote as follows - <• - ‘ - "Your photos and detailed information,to hand. Altogether, your photos . and matter, will take.some pages more than we have space available for at this Late hour, so T must ask your permission to condense.’ ’We shall, aim to preserve all' that is essential. I feel sure you will recognise that we are in a real, difficulty, and while we want to do all we can, in appreciation of. the matter you have sent, we are obliged to work to space. The book only has 160 pages, of .which ’ about 60 are set aside for advertising to help the cost, which runs Intel £1400” CLOSING OF STREETS. The Lands and Survey Department wrote with reference to the • closing of Russell, i Fraser, and Johnson streets, and advised that it had been found impracticable to issue the titles direct to the Thames. Hospital Board and the N.Z. Dairy Co., Ltd. It would . be necessary for a transfer of portion of the area to His Majesty the King to ! prepared against .the title, and when this was done a warrant would be issued by the Survey Office for the issue of a certificate of title to the Dairy Company for section 46. Sections 33, 34, and part of 3'5,. Block 2, ' would at .the same time be vested as ' a public- hospital site. The council wais asked to expedite arrangements for the necessary transfer of the sections. . The Mayor, said that the last information .received was .that the department would issue the titles direct. The necessary instructions had been given to the solicitor to preapre the work. He was hopeful that the transfer would complete the details of the land, ahd he was still hopeful that he would yet live to see the hospital erected. ’ . EXTENSION OF SCHOOL SITE. A firm of Auckland solicitors wrotp ‘ on behalf of the Auckland. Education Board requesting the council to give > reference to its title to sections 1,2, 3, 14, 15, and 16 of. the municipal reserve; Block XVII.; Paeroa township, --and advising that .the board accepted the council's offer to sell the’ land j for £230 cash,-.payable on completion cf the transfer: the land to be utilised by the Education Board 'as 1 an extension of the playing area for the ■■ Paeroa District High School. In answer to Cr. Flatt the Mayor said that it was merely a mattier of machinery, now, and the position was very gratifying. This view was alpo shared by Cr.. Porritt. • - ' LIBRARY SITE. The Under-Secretary, Lands and Survey Department, forwarded information asked for in connection with the transfer of section 27, block 1, __frdm the trustees of the Ohinemuri Public Library to the council. A-fresh deed of assignment was forwarded. The Mayor said that the necessary signatures had been secured and the documents were in course of preparation. In answer to Cr. Pinder, the Mayor said that the municipality could sell the present library site if it desired. STORM-WATER J. H. Findlay, Auckland, wrote, with ‘reference to his property ,on Puke Road, and drew attention to the storm-water which lay continuously f on .the centre of the property. A request was made to connect a drain to the sewer so as to let the water away. It was decided to advise the writer that the council could not allow storm-water to enter the sewerage system. R. Kallu wrote asking that T he be given an opportunity of tendering for the council's work of sewerage connections. It was decided to explain to the applicant that he was entitled to tender for the council’s work, together with the firm of F. Battson. P. J. Jennings applied for a sewerage connection .to his property in Bradley S.treet, and advised that the permission of. the adjoining owner had been obtained to take the main through his property. The Mayor said that he could not recommend .the proposal. It was desirable to make the connection from the street rather than through private property. If the sewerage was /taken through as the writer suggested it would mean the council laying 95ft of pipes as against 62ft from the leadline. To. Cr. Silcock the M,ayor said that the work would have to be done out -of loan money. Cr. Edwards, moved that provided >4:he applicant was prepared to pay the
difference between the cost of. the 62ft and 95ft connections the application would be granted. Seconded by Cr. Silcock. Cr. de Castro thought that the matter should be referred to the works committee.
The Mayor pointed out that it was not a four-man job to discuss the position and arrive at a decision. ; The resolution was carried. EXTENSION OF WATER. Mrs M. E. Kibble, Claremont Avenue .applied for an extension of the water service to her property, afid enclosed the necessary fee for the cost of the connection. The application was, granted subject ,to certain conditions. LOAN MONEYS. The Public Trustee, Wellington forwarded the debentures and other documents for signature in connection with the raising of the loans of £6OOO and £4OOO respectively. The matter was referred to the finance committee. , The Mayor intimated that Cr. Porritt had perused the documents and was satisfied that',they were in order. REQUEST OF FIRE COUNCIL. The Paeroa Fire Council made application for assistance in making a ■suitable presentation to Dr. T. G. Smith, who had acted in the capacity 'of honorary surgeon to the brigade for the last 25 years. On the motion of Cr. Brenan it Was resolved to- inform the Fire Council that the council had no fund from which "it could legally make a donation, but that the Mayor, councillors, and town clerk had subscribed .towards the project. It was also decided to record the council’s appreciation of the long and honourable'services rendered to the community by Dr. Smith. OLD RAILWAY BRIDGE. Cr. Brenan suggested that it might be possible to have the present railway bridge left for pedestrian traffic when the new bridge was brought into use. It was decided to forward a request to that end to the department through the member for the distirict. The Mayor remarked that he did not think there was much chance of .having the request granted.
