JERSEY SALE.

KEEN COMPETITION AT WALTON. COW REALISES 400 GUINEAS. A highly successful sale of" the Otterburn Jersey herd, owned by Messrs Mears Bros., a,t Walton, was conducted by the Farmers’ Co-operar-tive Auctioneering Co., Ltd., on Thursday last. Buyers., were present from all parte of the province, and so large was the crown that the big marquee was too small .to accommodate them and the sale had to be conducted in the open. In opening the salp the veteran stock auctioneer,'Mr G. F. McCullagh, explained that the sale was only taking place on account of the death of one of the partners. Messrs Mears Bros, h,ad gone to considerable trouble and expense to get their herd together, and when purchasing nothing but the best would suit them. Hence buyers had an unique opportunity, and one that would probably never occur again, of purchasing some of the best blood in the Dominion. That long purses would be needed was soon made evident, the first cow being sold for 65 gns., while her heifer calf brought 30 gns., and as the sale proceeded prices rose. The top price realised was 400 gns., which Mr, F. W. Walters, of Waitoa, paid for the imported cow Goodwlpod Ruby. Bidding commenced at 200 gns. and rapidly reach the 300-gns. mark. A spirited duel between Mr Walters and Mr H. Watkin, of Takanini, resulted . in the former having the cow knocked down to hiqr amid applause. The same, buyer also bought a heifer calf from the same cow for 70 gns. The next best price was 220 gns. for Fox’s Freda, also purchased by Mr Walters, who also ’secured her calf for 50 gns. Quite a number of other cows were' sold for over 100 gns., while the average price paid for 22 cowls was 87 gns.; four dry cows averaged 30 gns., and nine heifers 37 gns. There wais remarkable 'competition for this season’s calves, bidding reaching .as high as 70 gns., while the average price was 30 gns. The 3-year-old bull 1 Blonde’s Golden Sultan was sold for 60 gns. to Mr Colson, of Waihou. The older bull, Otterburn Sultan,” was passed in, while .the younger bulls, sold from 30 gns. to 41. gns.
