SOCIAL AND DANCE.

BASKETBALL TEAMS’ FUNCTION. ENJOYABLE EVENING»SPENT. A large crowd attended the social and euchre tournament held under the auspices of the Paeroa Basketball Association at the Gaiety Theatre last evening. Although this association was only formed at the commencement of this winter it already boasts of isix teams, ea;ch with a full, membership. The young ladies last night clearly demonstrated that they Were not only keen and enthusiastic play- , ers of basketball, but are also capable organisers of social functions. The proceedings passed off without a hitch, despite the large crowd that was present. Many novelties were in-, troduced into the decorative scheme in the theatre, the colours of the varioujs teams being used with great effect. The euchre tournament, in the charge of Misses C. Taylor, and E. E. Freeman, was held on the stage, and the body of the hall, was fully occupied by dancers. Messrs Crosby and Pennell fulfilled the duties of M’s.C. During the evening the president of the association (Mr G. H. Taylor) formally presented the handsome shield, donated by the Paeroa District High School Committee, to Miss Freeman, captain of the Kiwi team, this gear’s winners. Mr Taylor congratu-. lated the team on its success, and said he trusted that the same friendly rivalry z would \ prevail, next season. The president also presented the euchre prizes won during the evening as follows: Ladies, Mrs W. Grant, first; Mrs Lipsham (senr„), second ; Miss D. Tierney, third. Men: J. • O’Brien, first; S'. Clayton, second; W; Bottomley, third. A word of praise is due to the indefatigable secretary of th ©association-,. Miss C. Taylor, and the committee, which worked so hard to ensure the functior being the success it/ was.
