CAR OVERTURNS.
ACCIDENT ON. TE AROHA ROAD. OCCUPANTS ESCAPE LIGHTLY. What might have resulted in a serious accident occurred about 6 o’clock on Saturday evening at the intersection of the old Te Aroha Road with the main Paeroa-Te Aroha Road, opposite Mrs Nicholl's house. A Ford motor-car, driven by Mr J. Dibble, Paeroa, with Messrs F. Bayfield and Harder, was returning to Paeroa. from Te Aroha at a moderate rate of speed. When near the place mentioned .the front tyre on the driver’s side burst, causing the car to pwerve suddenly and get out of steering control. Before Mr Dibble could stop the engine the car had careered across the road, and finally came into violent collision with an electric light pole. The impact caused the car to turn completely upside down.
The occupants had a marvellous escape from injury. In some unaccountable way Mr Dibble landed on his feet with the steering wheel in his hands. Mr Harder was thrown clear, while Mr Bayfield, who was sitting between the other two, was extricated from the tangled mass of the hood. The three o'cctipants were uninjured, except for minor bruises and shock. The car was badly damaged.. The wind-screen was smashed, the radiator, front wheels, and mudguards were badly twisted and broken, and one rear wheel was, smashed.
The sound of the impact was heard a considerable distance away, and willing hands, fearing a more serious accident, were quickly pn .the scene. It is understood that the car is covered by insurance.
