DISTRICT NEWS.

' WAITAKARURU. TENNIS. Two shell tennis comts are being laid down for the Waitakaruru Tennis Club on the domain alongside the concrete court. The work is being done by voluntary labour, the people of the district having responded in a very willing manner. Since Saturday last tlhere has been at least, ten men and three drays employed every day. The surface layer of peat soil has been removed, and shell is being carted for some distance to form the playing surface. The club hopes to have the. courts fit for play by the opening day, Saturday next, and .the indications are that the work will be finished by that day. TURUA. SCHOOL BENEFIT. A benefit picture entertainment in aid of the Turua school funds was ph’ganised by Mr F. Olsen and held in the Victoria Hall on Tuesday evening. The builidng wais packed to its capacity. Advantage was taken during the evening to bid farewell to Mr J. L. Brownlee, the schoolmaster, who, after over 12 years of service at Turua, has received notice of transfer to Waiotira. He will leave at the end the week. Mr D. G. McMillan spoke of the good work performed by Mr Brownlee, bo'll! in and out of school and of the regret of the district at his departure. Mr J. Mules also spoke, and on behalf off the people of tlie school district presented Mr Brownlee with a wallet containing a cheque. During his reply Mr Brownlee gave sonic interesting information concerning the progress, of the district during tlie last twelve years. NGATEA. CHURCH FETE. A bazaar in aid of the Ngatea. Methodist Church funds was held in the Public Hall on Tuesday, and proved highly successful from all t viewpoints. A great deal bit preparation had been carried out In a thorough manner!, tnd the various stalls were well laden with goods that met with a ready demand. ’ The building was prettily decorated, and stalls had been, erected for the full length of one side and end, leaving the rest of the space fefr the 'competitions. The stalls, with their holders, were: Sewing, Mrs Maiiktelow, M'rs Boyne, and Miss Gardiner ; produce, Mrs and Miss Dudding; lollies, Miss Baker and the Misses Zeigler; cakes, Mrs McDuff; refreshments, Meisdames Coppins, Birkenhead, Foster, and Clark; competitions, Mrs Tarver. These ladies had many assistants.

Numerous competitions were held, the. results, of some being: Dart-thrbw-Mr C. Molloy'; c.ol'k-spe.aring, Mr F. Nico! ; boys’ dart-throwing, V. Birkenhead ; girls’ dart-throwing, Miss J. Rountree; quoit-throwing, ladies, Mi's Terrill, men, Mr C. Molloy; guessing beans in bottles, Mr® Davidson 270, actual number 261, Mrs Tarver .400, actual number 401, tacks In bottle 351, Mrs Ingram 350 ; guessing the length of rod (sft 6 3-32 in), three tied, Mrs T. Smith, Mr E. Burduss, and the Rev. E. H. Bro'olker.

It was originally intended to continue .the function on the following evening, bub it was postponed till the night of the election, when in addition the results will be announced as they arrive. Several of the competitions will be continued on that evening.
