GAIETY THEATRE PICTURES. TO-NIGHT. , : DOUBLE-STAR PROGRAMME. . “THE PILGRIM.” "The Pilgrim” is one of .the prin- , cipal pictures to be shown to-night. Charlie Chaplin, appropriately termed tile “Apostle of Joy,” loses no. time from the very beginning of- this' masterpiece of humour in four reels to get nito complications that in- - crease with, alarming rApidity withevery effort to extricate himself. In ■ the first place, without saying a word ; ; to anybody, he leaves Sing-Sing prison <y.bound for the “open spaces.” only chance of changing his prison; garb is into the sombre clothes of a- = ’- clergyman, which lead him into the strangest and most amusing difficulties. There is no doubt that “The Pilgrim” is a masterpiece Of humour, and ranks with the most laughtercompelling work that Chaplin has ever done. “ PIONEER TRAILS.” “Pioneer Trails” is the other star attraction for to-night. The time of the story is during the great gold . rush of ’49, when men rushed feverishly across the prairies to reach the mines. Robert Dale, with his wife and son, Jack, is on his way across the desert, when attacked by Indians. Jack is the only survivor, and he is ' - adopted by a Mrs Salter. From thenceforth he is known as Jack Plains. The story moves on twenty years, and we find Jack very much in love with Rose Miller, but not making any advances to the girl, because he believes himself below her station. However, all things come to a happy conclusion. Apart from the love story the film is full of thrills and exciting episodes. Cullen Landis and Alice Calhoun are .the stare.
