THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1925. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

There was an unmistakable sign of’summer weather in Paeroa yesterday. The morning dawned with an overcast sky, but as .the- day wore on “Old Sol” broke through and the hottest day this season was experienced.

Electors are reminded that the supplementary roll closes with the registrar for the Ohinemuri electorate at six o’clock to-morrow evening. This will be the last opportunity for those persons not already on the electoral roll to have their names recorded in time for the election next month. . ■.

In our advertising columns, Mr H. E. Raffills, motor and general engineer, Hughendon Street, Paeroa, announces that his spacious garage is now fully equipped and stocked, ready to undertake all classes of motor and general engineering wprks. Prompt despatch to all jobs will be given, and all materials and work is guaranteed. A point of particular interest to farmers is that Mr Raffills holds the T'reloar Service Station, and is carrying a large range of milking machine accessories, rubber-ware, belting, lubricating oils, and benzine. (Advt.)

Only formal business was transacted at the monthly meeting of the Thames Hospital Board on Monday. Mr W. E. Hale presided over a full attendance of members, with the exception of Mr Kennedy. The resignation of Nurse Twentyman was acceptwith regret. The Hauraki Ladies’ Benevolent Society were granted its monthly £lO grant for meeting charitable aid calls in Thames. The chairman and secretary were appointed the board’s delegates to the Hospital Boards’ Conference. Accounts totalling £1834 12k. lOd. were passed for payment, leaving a debit balance in the board’s account of £59 6s. 6d.

During the past few' weeks many of. those persons who have been unfortuate enough to have been inmates of the Thames Hospital have been pressed for payment of the charges due to the Hospital. Board. There is an enormous amount of outstanding accounts, including about £lso' due for maternity cases alone, and in view of the expressed opinions of .the contributing local bodies, big efforts .are being made to collect as much as possible. A big batch of letters from those unable to pay came before the board on Monday, and were dealt with on their merits. Those able, but unwilling, to pay will be pressed to. the utmost. There is as much difference between raw tobacco and toasted tobacco as there is between a raw potato and savory chips. It is not so much the material you use as the way you adopt in preparing it. Take, for instance, our locally manufactured tobaccos; they are all toasted, and as a result their latent properties have been brought fully out. Science applied, what else is it but commonsense. You need not be an expert to understand the wonderful, effect of this toasting process; flavour and ai oma will tell you ; so smooth and mellow, but what is equally important, consider their merits from a health point of view. The object of toasting is to eject any deleterious properties that may be contained in the leaf and to neutralise portton o’f the poisonous nicotine ; hence toasted may be smoked with impunity ; they will not affect the heart and nerves or the eyesight. Obtainabel, in three grades : Riverhead Gbld, mild and aromatic; Navy Cut (Bulldog), medium ; and Cut Plug No. 10' (Bullshead), full strength* Fm influenza Colas take ; Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure. 1
