PUKE HILL FIRE PREVENTION.
Sir, —May I inquire who is responsible for the fact that the outlying area of Hill Street and Puke Hill is not provided with an alarm and set 6. first-hand appliances ? There are at lease 40 residences, an hospital, boardinghouise, and railway station within reach of the fire-plugs on the water main, yet in the event of fire one would have to run over half a mile to the one and only firebell, and it would be a marvellous undertaking for any brigade with a hand-reel to. have water going within 1.5 minutes from the outbreak. -One citizen offered to meet the expenses of a bell. What has been done with that offer ? Have we not also a member of the local brigade in residence in Hill Street who could be responsible for a set of suitable gear kept in, a convenient position in .the suburb ? Must the horse escape so that we might get the door shut, or can we'have a little done to prevent perhaps serious damage? PUKE HOUSEHOLDER.
