INTERESTS OF FIRE BRIGADE.

£Ta the Editorj. Sir, —The lack of public interest in our local fire brigade is quite deplorable enough without developing into sheer contempt for the efforts of its volunteer members. I refer to the fact that the firemen have of late been devoting their own valuable time to. the preparing of a runningground alongside the domain in Willoughby Street for .the purpose of holding strenuous competitions to increase the brigade’s efficiency . Earth has been filled in. and careful turfing —the result of much careful labour — has improved a part of the course. It is very singular and exceedingly disheartening to find .that motorists, instead of using the ample spaces, in all directions, have singled out this special piece of work and ploughed it with wheel furrows, pushing the hardly set turf in all directions. Surely persons, could exercise a little care and thought, especially after such an appeal as this has been made. Firemen are contributing their own subscription -moneys, sacrificing their time and energy with no gain save ttiat of the satisfaction cf duty done in the interests of the town of Paeroa, some of whose inhabitants pass over the brigade’s work with shut eyes—in a double sense, may be. HYDRANT.
