That summer is approaching is evidenced by the fact that the summer outdoor sports and pastimes are unfolding, and throughout the district several clubs held their opening on Saturday. The green was in splendid order, and in his. opening address the president, Mr E. Edwards, congratulated the green superintendent, Mr Hamilton, on the very effective w,ay he had prepared it. The surroundings, too, were quite in keeping with the well kept appearance of the green. The president welcomed the visitors to the twenty-first birthady of the club, and said that the attendance proved conclusively .that the club was appreciated, not only by sister clubs but by the local bowlers as well. The number of new players present was an assurance that interest was riot waning. He hoped they would not only soon learn to “kiss kitty,” but to “hug her as well.” He apologised for the non-attendance of Thames, representatives, who were having their opening that day, and also for Matamata Club. He called on Mrs Edwards, who threw the jack, and amidst cheere the green was declared opened.

Night play, he held, had m.ariy advantages. It was just a little different from the day play, and had proved quite a social function. In fact, it was a wonderful success, both , socially and financially, and it would not be long before the whole of the initial or capital expenditure had been paid off. The surroundings of the green were pleasing, and’- everything pointed to another successful season. He wished the club a successful and enjoyable season, and one that they could look back on and think it the best in the club’s history. Mrs Marshall then threw the jack amidst cheers, and.the green was declared open for night play. Although the night was somewhat chilly quite a number participated in the.evening’s games.
