FOOTBALL SOCIAL. PRESENTATION OF SHIELD. An enjoyable social and dance was held in the Netherton Hall on Thursday of last week, and was largely attended by settlers of the district 'and visitors from Paeroa, including the officials of the Paeroa Rugby Union. Opportunity was- taken during the evening to present the Primary Schools’ Rugby Shield, which was won this season by the Netherton schoolboy team. The presentation was made by the chairman ot the Paeroa Rugby Union (Mr W. Pennell). In handing the shield to the captain of the victorious team Mr Pennell, congratulated the lads on the success they had attained and said that it had been very pleasing to the union to see the shield so eagerly competed for by the different schools- He congratulated the team on the honour it had won for its school and district, and concluded by wishing the playeqs good luck in the future. He also expressed the hope that as the boys crew up they would continue to play “the good old game” and keep the sport clean, and that in the not too distant future the boys who had won honours that night would be the winners of the senior shield. Other speakers included Mr R. B. Penlington, Paeroa Referees’ Association, and J. M. Crosby, secretary of the Paeroa Rugby Union, each of whom congratulated the winners and paid tribute to their sportsmanlike qualities. Mr C. H. Potter responded on behalf of the team and thanked the speakers for the praise they had bestowed upon the boys. M T. L. Rice, headmaster at Nettherton, said that he wished to congratulate the boys on the honour they had won for their school, and he trusted that the success met with this season would be an incentive to the team to always “play up and play tne game.” Mr R. H. Heappcy then presented Mr J. Wilson’s medal for the best forward to Master Duncan, and Mrs C. H. Potter’s medal for the beet back to Master Johnson. Each recipient was heartily applauded on receiving his trophy. During the evening songs were contributed by Miss McCullay, and Messrs G. Royal and W. Pennell.
After supper had been partaken of the hall was cleared far dancing, the music for which was contributed by Mrs W. Pennell (piano), C. Twigg (violin), and G. Royal (flute). Extras were supplied by Miss Halligan and Master Potter. Tlie duties of M.C. were faultlessly carried out by Mr E. Potter.
