PIPIROA FERRY.

DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL. SUGGESTED USE OF KOPU PUNT. Letters from Mr A. E. E. Dodd and the Thames Chamber of Commerce, the text of which has already been published, were read at the Hauraki Plains County Council meeting bn Tuesday last. The chairman (Mr J. C. Miller) reported that the committee had met and decided to ask Mr Dodd if the punt at present lying idle at Kopu could be borrowed for use at Pipiroa. The chairman of the Thames County Council was agreeable to the proposal.. Permission to erect the ferry would have to be obtained from the Marine Department. Cr. Harris supported the borrowing of .the punt. Cr. Hare opposed shifting the Wharepoa ferry punt, as had been suggested by Mr Dbdd, and this was supported by Crs. Mayn and McLoughlin. . Cr. Madgwick was of the opinion that it would not be good business for the county to spend about £BOO on a ferry at Pipiroa when a. bridge Was likely to be erected in the near future. Cr. Mayn agreed. < Cr. Madgwick said that the Wharepoa ferry was a white elephant, and should be closed down., Cr. Harris said that the bridge at Pipiroa would take three years to build. If Mr Dodd’s, prediction of a profit of £250 a year was anywhere near right the expenditure would be justified. Cr. Madgwick said that Mr Dodd had, in basing his estimate of the profit, taken into consideration the fact that he could realise on his plant when the ferry was 1 no longer required. but the council would have to spend about £5OO for approaches, and this would be a dead loss. Cr. Parfitt pointed out that the annual loss on the Wharepoa ferry was about £433, and he did not isee why the Pipiroa riding should not have the facilities that, were so much required. The loss would not be so great as that on the other ferries.

Cr. Hare moved that the committee make inquiries with regard to acquiring the punt from Kopu, and that the engineer submit a report on the cost of equipping.

The engineer suggested calling tenders for the right to run a ferry at the point.

This alternative was incorporated in the motion, which was carried.
