HOCKEY.
PLAY ON THE RACECOURSE; NGATEA DEFEATS PAEROA. For the third time this season the Paeroa Ladies’ Hockey Club played a team from Ngatea. The match, which was played on the No. 2 ground at tne Racecourse, resulted in a win for the visitors by one goal to nil. Ngatea. has now’ wan two out of three against the local club, . Saturday’s game was- a very fair exhibition of hockey, and there is little doubt that Paeroa made the better showing throughout the game, tlie play of Misses Shand. A. Morland. McKee and L. Payne being particularly sound, but as yet, a number of the players have to learn to keep thenplaces on the field, and to acquire the habit of getting rid of the ball quickly. Several times on Saturday, after the ball had been taken into the circle, Paeroa lost the opportunity to score, simply because the plajeis were not in their positions, and were too slow .in following up. However, considering that two-thirds of the team had never played tlie game until a few months ago, the progress made can be considered quite satisfactory. and next season the team should be a formidable one in the district. Without the services of Miss G. Quintal on Saturday the Ngatea team was somewhat handicapped, but on the , whole considerable improvement in the standard of play was shown, and the team is to be congratulated on winning tlie “conqueror.” Miss D. Miller shot the goal for the visitors.
