WAIKINO TRAGEDY ECHO
DISCUSSION IN PARLIAMENT. COMPENSATING THE PARENTS. During tlie debate in Parliament-on the Educational Estimates on Friday night the horror of the Waikino tragedy was refreshed in the minds of tlie House by Mr H. Poland, who contended that compensation should be paid to the parents of the children. The Government, he acknowledged, had dealt fairly by the brave headmaster (Mr Reid), who wap severely injured, but nothing had been done for the parents of the murdered children. The mother of one. victim had been long in hospital lying at death’s door as a result of the tragedy. A petition on benalf of the parents had been reported for favourable consideration, but so, far without result.
In reply, the Hon. Sir C. J. Parr said that difficulties had arisen. The Attorney-General had pointed to tlie danger of establishing a precedent. He (the speaker) proposed to look again into the matter and see what could be done.
