VALEDICTORY.
MR. J. W. T. JONES FARWELLED. SCHOLARS’ APPRECIATION. A complimentary social was tendered Mr and Mrs J. W. T. Jones in the Public Hall, Karangahake, on Friday evening, before their departure from the locality. Mr W. Bramble presided, and stated that the function had been organised by the pupils of the school, with the assistance of their parents. During an interval in the musical portion of the programme Mr Bramble presented Mr Jonejs with a solid leather suit-case and an illuminated address and Mrs Jones with an afternoon tea-set as slight tokens of the esteem in which they were held, not only by the school children but by all the residents of Karangahake. Mr F. Clarke ably supported the re-marks made by Mr Bramble, and said that the people of Karangahake sincerely regretted the departure of the guests of the evening. He paid special tribute to the services Mr Jones had rendered to the district, 'especially in the interests of football, not only in Karangahake but throughout the district. Touching on the school life, Mr Clarke said that the successes gained by the pupils under Mr Jones’ tuition had been exceptionally good, and he had won the respect and .veneration of the children, all of whom were genuinely sorry to lose their headmaster.
Mr Jones thanked the gathering for their tokens of esteem, and also for the many kind words expressed that evening. He said he had enjoyed his two years at Karangahake, and the fact that a transfer meant promotion was his chief object in leaving. It had given him great pleasure, to do what little he had done in the district, and he felt proud to think that his humble efforts hitd been appreciated, Mr Jones concluded by wishing tlie school every success and prosperity in the future, nad said that he would follow the doings of the school with interest.
At the conclusion of the presentation the hall was cleared for dancing. The members of the Karangahakfe School Committee also presented Mr Jones with a silver lead pencil, accompanied by a letter of thanks and appreciation of the good work done. Regret was expressed at his departure, but the committee wished him every success in the future. presentation BY CHURCH. •On Sunday morning the parishioners of St. Aidan’s Church, Karahgahake, made a presentation to Mr and Mrs Jones as a token of appreciation of the interest that they had taken in church affairs during their stay in Karangahake. In handing Mrs Jones a handsome salad bowl and servers, and Mr Jones a shaving companion, the vicar (the Rev. F. B. Dobson) referred to the great assistance the recipients had been in the parish, and he assured them that their loss to the district would be keenly felt. Mr Dobson paid special tribute to the good work carried out by Mr Jones as lay-dreader, and concluded by wishing them good health and happiness in their new sphere at Kopu.
