HOCKEY.
GAME AT NGATEA. PAEROA LADIES DEFEATED. On Saturday afternoon the Paeroa ladies’ hockey team journeyed to Ngatea and played the return match with that club’s, team. Although the weather was fine the ground was exceptionally .rough, and mud holeis, several incnes deep, were mot with on the playing area. The Ngatea team had the better of the game throughout, and although the score was only one genl to nil, the team played well and gave a. good exhibition of hockey. The defence of the home. backs was very sound, and the goal that was gained was the outcome of good combined play.
Although there were only two alterations in the Paeroa team from the previous Saturday the play collectively was very weak, and although comparatively few breaches were committed the team lacked ‘combination, and seemed to have little idea of following up and playing a close game. The game was fast enough, and the visitors forced the pace throughout, but were always lacking when that little bit of dash was required in the circle. The following were the teams: —
Ngatea.—Miss P. Hayward, Mrs Berte'sen, Misses E. McDuff, M. Courtenay, M. Crookes, L. Birkenhead,! D. Wade, D. Miller, E. Wheeler, M. Quintal, and G. Quintal. Paeroa—Misses P. Treanor, E. Carthy, N. -Morland, L. McKee, V. Shand, F. Shaw, C. Swann, A. Morland, L. Payne, N. Fitch, B. Bunting. From the bully-off Ngatea attacked and carried play into the circle, but Miss Treanor cleared to the line. From the roll-in Miss Shand carried up the field and passed to Miss Carthy, who was penalised on clearing. The free hit was fielded by Miss Payne, who put in a. good run but was unsupported, and Mitas Wade hit the ball to neutral territory, where Miss M. Quintal carried into the circle but her shot went wide. From a roll-in Miss Bunting made a strongrun up the field before centring, and what looked like a certain score was spoiled by a breach. Ngatea carried dawn the field, but Miss McKee cleared in good style. Following it. loose rush Miss Payne sent out to Miss Bunting, the latter carrying up the field to the twenty-five line, where give and take play ensued for a considerable time. As the outcome of a penalty Miss A. Morland cleared, smartly by hitting to Miss Swann, who carried well up the line, Miss Hayward returning.
In the second half Ngatea again attacked and carried into the circle, where a penalty bully was ordered. Miss Shand hit down the field, but the ball was returned by Miss Courtenay, and in a combined rush Miss Birkenhead shot the only goal of the game. Up and down play followed until the call of time. Mr Crabbe was referee.
After the match the visitors were hospitably entertained by the Ngatea club.
