On Wednesday the members of the Paeroa Ladies’ Golf Club will play a jumble match, medal round. Players will select their own partners. The Railway Department advertises, in this issue particulars of holiday excursion fares to Auckland in connection with the visit of the American Fleet and the Auckland Winter Exhibition. This month’s local rainfall to date has been fairly heavy. Records show that for .the nine days a total of .79in has been recorded. There have been six days’ rain, the heaviest fall being on Friday last, when .39in was recorded. The actual rainfall registered as a result of the hailstorm on that day amounted to ,30in. Following the hailstorm on Friday afternoon fine weather prevailed locally over the week-end. Yesterday afternoon there was a, medium south-westerly wind, which greatly helped in drying the saturated ground and muddy footwalks. Heavy rain fell last night, followed by a light frost. This morning there was a pall of fog over the town. The Te Aroha Borough Council is now running its own electric plant (says the News). The transformers in the Thames Valley Board's system breaking down has made this necessary. The dislocation caused has been rather serious, and it is stated that Price’s foundry at Thames lias been thrown out of action and- many of the men are idle. The transformer used by the Power Board, or the borough supply has been taken to replace one that has broken down, and until its return it will be necessary or the borough to rely upon its own plant. For Children’s. Hacking Cough, Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure.
Discussing the time of receiving milk at the Turua factory, it was pointed out that it cost 18s an hour to run the factory while waiting for a supplier who was late, while if the staff was kept working beyond the award houns overtime had to be paid. A recent visitor to Australia informs the' “Matamata Record” that the country roads in Australia, even a few miles out of the great cities are inferior to those of New Zealand. He also states; that the country towns in New Zealand are far ahead of those in Australia in providing drainage, water, and electricity to their inhabitants.
The disposal of the season’s dairy output is purely a gamble. At least directors of some factories tell their suppliers so, and those who are intimately associated with the business will agree that the designation is correct. Mr Leeson, one of the directors ■of the Morrinsville Company, in speaking on the subject at the annual meeting the other day, said that the placing of their manufactured product' must remain a gamble for the reason that on one could accurately foretell the seasons likely to be experienced in the different manufacturing countries of the world.
What is the lesat injurious form of smoking ? The dotcors favour the pipe. So does Mr Stanley Baldwin, the British Premier (an inveterate smoker). By the way, Mr Baldwin differentiates between smokers. He says, judging by his experience, pipe s.mokera take a wider and saner view of things than . either cigarette oi cigar smokers. Be that as it may, the pipe has much to recommend it hygienically. And what, of the tobacco ? That is an all-important question. Tobaccos heavily charged with nicotine (like most of the imported brands) cannot be smoked habitually without causing trouble sooner or later. The heart, the nerves, or the general health fo bound to suffer. In marked contrast are our New Zealand-grown tobaccos, which, as a resu-t of the toasting process W which they are now subjected, are so pure and so comparatively free from nicotine that they may be indulged in freely with absolute safety. That’s why doctors recommend them. Obtainable in three grades: Riverhead Gold, mild; Navy Cut (Bulldog), medium ; or Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), full strength.*
