The Government meteorologist telegraphed to the local postmaster at noon to-day: “Expect southerly gale, and cold and stormy weather. Make news known as widely as possible.”
Members of the Thames Valley Jersey Breeders' Club, and others interested in the breed, are reminded that the annual meeting of the club is to be held f at the NN.Z. Co-op. Dairy Cb.’s office, Paeroa, on Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock.
It is undenstood that the Te Aroha Chamber of Commerce, with the assistance of the borough council, in-, tends making representations to the Admiral of the American Fleet to allow a party of petty officers and men to visit Te Aroha while the warships are at Auckland.
The wide variety of illustrations in this week’s “N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review” will appeal . to everyone. The Rugby contests at Eden Park form a particularly interesting series( while hockey enthusiasts will give special attention to the line set of snaps-depicting the Australia v. Auckland match. The King’s College Old Boy’s annual reunion is represented together with other local features. The centre pages are comprised bf scenes at the American Henley Regatta, famous Canadian Regiment, Broadway show girls, etc. Snapshots at the Wellington Racing Carnival and at Long Island, New York, make an attractive page, and there is a wide variety of miscellaneous pictures.
‘‘The time lias come when we will soon have to rebuild some of our older bridges,” stated Mr T. Mason Chambers to members of the Hawke’s Bay County Council (reports the Herald). Work on the Redcliffe bridge, he said, would have to commence in a comparatively short time, and he suggested that they should adopt a policy of rebuilding in ferro-concrete, doing part of the work each year. By setting aside £2OOO each year and the Main Highways Board granting a similar amount they would then be able to gradually tarry out the work. With regard to the Redcliffe bridge the council decided to adopt a policy of rebuilding in concrete, spread over a number of years, on the under-' standing that the Main Highways Board gave a subsidy bf £1 for £l. The liquor confiscated by the Napier police in their raids on the bowling clubs last Easter has been taken to the Napier Hospital and delivery acknowledged. The consignment consisted of 135 pint bottles, of ale, three jars of draught ale, one .part keg of draught ale, 51 bottles of whisky, and one part bottle of gin (says the "Tribune”). "With the exception of the draught ale. which was spilled, these liquors have been taken into stock,” stated the house, manager in his report to the Hospital Board. In reply to .a member the chairman said that as the beer was quite flat he had ordered it to be poured down the sink. ‘‘Oh, yes, but some men will drink beer any way,” said Mr Donovan, amidst laughter. “I hope the Press will acknowledge .the gift.” “I don’t think that the Press should be allowed to publish it,” said Mr L. W. Fowler. ‘‘We will have an. influx of bowlers to the hospital.”
