PROHIBITION LEAGUE.

SOCIAL EVENING AT PAEROA. A very pleasant social evening was held in the Centenary Hall last Monday night, when friends and sympathisers with the Prohibition League met together. The hall was prettily decorated in blue and white streamers, and presented quite a festive appearance. Everything went with a swing from start to finish as game followed game interspersed with a few musical items. The chairman welcomed the visitors, some having come from Hamilton and Thames, while apologies were received from Waihi and Te Aroha. Two of the visitors, Mr de la Mare and Mr Gittos, delighted the audience with their dry humour and witty speeches. The former visitor recalled the early days of his boyhood whilst at school in Christchurch when Prohibition began its career. This was 35 years ago, and since then he hal witnessed its enormous growth in the Dominion. To-day, he pointed out, there were more people voting for national prohibition than for any other issue. Mr Gittos gave various incidents from his experiences as a commercial traveller, and showed that every town had its own excuse for quiet business. After the speeches a delightful supper was served, and after a few more games the evening ended with, the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
