BELMONT ROAD.

COST OF MAINTENANCE. CRITICISM BY COUNCILLOR. 11l response to a request made by Cr. J. Pinder at the June meeting, the town clerk supplied the following information at Thursday night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council relative to the expenditure on Belmont Road for a period of three years, from June 1, 1922, to May 31, 1925 : Maintenance and cleaning, £237 16s 8d ; renewing road, £lB2 18p lOd; renewing footpath, £153 3s 2d, Cr. Pinder said that the figures •supplied convinced him in his contention that far top much money had been spent on the road in question. Cr. do Castro asked what Cr. Pinder had to suggest to lighten the cost. Cr. Pinder replied that if he had his way the whole road would be torn up and laid down in a proper fashion. The Mayor remarked that the criticism of the road by Cr. Cr. Pinder was hardly fair. Admittedly the best materials might not have been used in the construction, but it was useless suggesting that the road should be torn up and relaid. The cost would be about £soo'o. He considered that the cost of maintenance over the three years was very reasonable. The cost of cleaning the street was under 10s a week. Cr. Flatt agreed with the remarks ol the Mayor. Possibly, he said, when the road was laid down the job was not as good as it might have been, but there was no gainsaying that tne road had served its purpose well, and he did not think the money spent on it over the past three years should be grudged. He had been told that before being put down in bitumen the maintenance cost of the road to tne Ohinemuri County Council was somewhere about £2OO a year. The discussion was allowed to drop.
