PARALYSIS CASES.
— PENSIONS FOR CHILDREN. DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL. At Wednesday night's meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council a letter was received from the Runanga County Council asking support for the following resolution: — "That the Government be urged to provide pensions for the victims of infantile paralysis.” Cr. Flatt said there was no dOubt. that there were many cases where assistance would be very welcome. He knew of a case at Waikinb, and one in Paeroa, where monetary relief would be welcome. He thought the council might well support the resolution.
Cr. Silcock concurred, saying that lie knew of cases where parents had been unable to provide the necessary treatment for children. Cr. Hare said that Jhe resolution had his sympathy, but lie was afraid that the Government would turn the matter down.
Cr? de Castro agreed', and said that the Government had already taken steps in the matter. The Mayor said it would not be reasonable to expect the Government to provide pensions for all misfortunes and epidemics that visited the people. The burden car ratepayers for hospital and charitable aid was already a very heavy one. Cr. Flatt remarked that the council was not asked to fix any definite sum, and he thought that the resolution should be supported, if only to show that the council was sympathetic in the terrible misfortunes of the children and the handicap of the parents.
On a show of hands being taken Crs. Edwards, Silcock, Pinder, and Flatt voted in favour of supporting the Runanga resolution. The Mayor, Cns. Brenan, Hare, de Castro, and Porritt voted against, and the resolution was therefore lost.
