WORKS IN THE BOROUGH

REPORT OF COMMITTEE.

The following report of the Works Committee was approved at a meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council on Wednesday night:— “A tour of inspection of the whole borough w.afe made during the past month, and estimates of what the committee- considers the most urgent work have been drawn up and are submitted herewith. As usual, we find that there is much work which we could wish to underkike, but finances will not permit. “The position of the Street Improvements Loan, with estimates of the cost of work in hand, has been prepared, This shows that with the money in hand it will not be possible to do the last 100 ft of Moore Road nor lower Hill Street, and the latter is an absolute necessity. Your committee hlso thinks that the portion of Belmont Road from the P.aeroa Hotel to Taylor’s Avenue should be formed in conformity with Taylor’s Avenue, so as to give' a good approach from the station to the town. “Towards tire end of the year it will be necessary to form the footpath and road in the vicinity of the new post office. It is also desirable to metal the upper portion of Flora Street, and Dearie and George streets. Estimates for these works will be prepared and presented at the next meeting of the council. “The necessary data have been taken out and application, made to the Main Highways Board for a subsidy of £2OO oir the main roads. “The 4in water-main as promised to the Railway Department has been laid in Hill Street, and Moore Road, and the water, turned on in same. Quotations were obtained for supplies, including cabled quotations from England. These proved the most satisfactory in regard to both delivery and price, being £5 5s less per ton than those purchased ex ship Auckland for the urgent work just completed. The cast' iron mains (44 tons) necessary to liiy the lines agreed on by the council have therefore been ordered from England, and are to- be shipped early next month, which, will enable the work to be proceeded with during the good weather period. “Old Te Aroh.a Road has received 22 yards of metal which has very considerably improved the position and will keep the road open for traffic.

“When the weather has been favourable patching of streets has been carried out by our teams, and fair has been made. This work will be continued during the next month. Very little other maintenance work hats been done owing to the fact that the staff has been busy on the water mains and Moore Road, but it. is anticipated that these works will be sufficiently advanced in a few days to permit of footpath maintenance being given special attention. “Concrete kerbs are being made in the borough yard for Moore Road in 3ft lengths, the mixing being done in a concrete mixer. Already about 400 ft have been cast, .and it is hoped to keep considerably under the estimates for this work.

:. “The metal carting to Nahum Street was not proceeding satisTactorily, so the contract wais cancelled and let to the next lowest tenderer. Unfortunately the weather conditions have made completion impossible so far.
