POLICE COURT.

RESULT OF DRUNKENNESS. PREVIOUS OFFENDER SENTENCED At the Paeroa Police Court this morning, before Mr W. Marshall, J.P., William Callaghan, aliass James .Edwards, a middle-aged labourer, was charged with being found drunk in Belmont Road yesterday evening. Defendant had been previously convicted for a similar offence. A second charge was also, preferred in that lie had caused offensive matter by vomiting in the street. Defendant pleaded guilty to both charges. Constable McCliiichy stated that at '5 p.m. yesterday he had found defendant lying in a state of helpless drunkenness outside a shop in Belmont Road. The footpath where the man wa,s lying was in a .disgusting state, and it was not, reasonable to expect tradespeople and pedestrians to put up with such filthy behaviour, and he pressed for a hetivy penalty. In answer to the Bench defendant stated that he had been to Te Aroha for the day, and lie intended going to Waihi in a respectable manner, but confessed to having had more drink than was good for him. He was at present out of work, but was going to a job on Monday. The Bench took a serious view of the case and said that such behiiviohr was not to.be tolerated.

Defendant wok convicted and fined £2 10s, in default 7 days’ imprisonment with hard labour.
