LIGHT-WEIGHT SCALES.
A, D. Sneddon, inspector of weights and measures, Hamilton, proceeded against Ah Ching, vegetable and fruit hawker, Paeroa, for being in possession of a scale which was not stamped as required by the Act. Mr E. W. Porritt appeared for defendant, who was not present, and a plea of guilty was entered.
Mr Porritt explained that defendant was in the employ of his father, who had been in business for many years, and wins recognised as one of the most honest men in Paeroa and who bbie an excellent character. A new set of scales, duly stamped, had since been purchased.
Mr Sneddon explained that when the scales were examined they were registering 31,b short-weight. It was the first ease of its kind in Paeroa for many years, and he did not press for a heavy penalty. The case was brought as a warning to others. A conviction wajs entered, and the Magistrate imposed a fine of £2, with costs £1 5s Bd. An order was made confiscating the scales.
CONVICTED OF DRUNKENNESS. Norman Borthwick, labourer, Paeroa, aged 28 years, was convicted and lined the amount, of his bail, £l, for being found in a drunken condition in Normanby Road on Sunday afternoon.
